The same thing happened on Annie Get Your Gun – once again she was replaced. And on Royal Wedding – a rash of no-shows and flake-outs culminated in Judy being, yet again, fired. By 1950, she was burnt out, unreliable. She’d become a star who was impossible to manage and the studio cancelled her contract.
Judy married movie director Vincente Minnelli in 1945 and soon after had her first daughter, Liza. Judy would later claim, in a series of posthumously discovered recordings, that the marriage with Minnelli had been set up by the studio.

Blame’s obituary in The Times explains his preoccupation with objets trouvés fashioned into fantastical necklaces, outré earrings, outrageous brooches and other items of bricolage. “I didn’t have any fear about using something that wasn’t classic jewellery material,” he said. “Because I had no training, I didn’t have any parameters. When we haven’t got the money, we have to use our imagination.” Certainly bling was never this thing.

Bill also suffered a wait this week, as he took a number at his lawyer’s office in order to make some last-minute changes to his will. You couldn’t help but feel his pain, especially as his Hep-V began to spread right before his very eyes. Now in a posthumous biography, the Academy Award winner — who crafted an image of purity on and off the screen — admits publicly for the first time that she gave birth to a child as the result of a brief fling in 1935 with her leading man, Clark Gable.
Because Young was unmarried at the time, her pregnancy was kept secret, and the baby girl was placed in an orphanage and later « adopted » by the actress, though no adoption papers were ever filed.
Hollywood had long speculated that Young and Gable were the girl’s natural parents. But Young, who had earned a reputation as being deeply religious, never commented on the rumors in her lifetime — even when daughter Judy Lewis wrote a 1994 book declaring that Gable was her father. Young’s book of memoirs, « The Things I Had to Learn, » published in 1961, never discussed the union.
Now, « Forever Young, » by Joan Webster Anderson, and available in bookstores on Friday, helps to clarify the long-ago tryst. The author interviewed Young at her Palm Springs, Calif., home for two weeks in May 1999, then communicated extensively with her by telephone and mail.
Young had admired the work of Anderson, a writer of Christian inspirational books who had best sellers with « Where Angels Walk, » « An Angel to Watch Over Me » and « The Power of Miracles, » and asked her to do the biography.
After being turned down by major New York publishing houses, « Forever Young, » which is filled with spiritual references, found a home with publisher Thomas More, an Allen, Texas, company that specializes in Catholic books.
