How do you pronounce Petula?

by Judith Ferrier

Are the b52s still performing?

I missed the opening act Berlin, saw OMD, they were ok, they played most of the pop songs. They played well but that will be the last time for me. Too much sing along, clapping along to every song really felt cheesy.

I saw the b52s when I was young and they were too. they blew me away the first time I saw them at an outdoor show.

I saw an older version that managed to play well but most of the show were songs that the ladies sang and Fred left the stage for a few songs and came back and sang again. He looked very old and I thought he would sing more of the early hits everybody loves. He did not look well and he kept a low profile.

I enjoyed the show but missed Fred on the stage.

Glad I went but again I knew this is the last b52 show for me.

They are a great band and brought a smile to my face every time I heard them.

Was Petula Clark friends with Karen Carpenter?

Elvis Presley: Doctor claims he ‘treated singer after faking death’

Not only did she rebuff the advances of Elvis Presley – who wanted a threesome with her and Karen Carpenter – but she sparked a race-relations scandal with singer Harry Belafonte, and fled to France, where she had become a sex symbol, to shed her goody-two-shoes image. Now 86 and still recording and touring – Petula will return to the West End as the bird lady in Mary Poppins in October – she says that she turned down the King because she wasn’t attracted to him and was protecting her singer friend, part of the Carpenters duo with her brother Richard until her death in 1983. “He was raring to go,” Petula says now, 50 years on. “Karen was lovely, but she was kind of innocent.

“I felt sort of responsible for her, so I got her out of there. Then I looked round, and Elvis was at the door, and he looked at me, like, ‘I’m going to get you one day.’ But he never did. Some people think he did. I think he put out the rumour that he did. But he didn’t.”

It was the late 1960s and Petula was cresting the wave of the Beatles-led British Invasion of the US charts which helped her become the first British female singer to win a Grammy.

Her hit single Downtown had secured her fame across the pond and she was invited to live performances and backstage parties wherever she went.

Petula and Karen Carpenter had become good friends and one night went to see Elvis perform.

He invited them to his dressing room after a show, where he angled for a threesome. “I didn’t find him that attractive,” says Petula. “It was when he was at his best!

Is Petula Clark still married to her first husband?

Petula Clark has a complicated love life. She’s been married to Claude Wolff, the father of her three grown-up children, for 55 years but no longer lives with him.

Instead, she shares her life with a boyfriend (she discreetly refuses to say who) whom she fell in love with ‘a few years ago’.

‘It’s a wonderful thing falling in love,’ she says. ‘There’s a song I wrote called Happiness – that sweet and fleeting feeling we all need to know is waiting here inside us.’ She half sings, half speaks the words. Stops. Smiles. ‘Being in love is that crazy, fantastic, warm feeling.’

Petula today shares her life with a boyfriend (she discreetly refuses to say who)

Petula lights up like a flashbulb as she speaks about falling in love, which is all rather wonderful given she has reached an age when… well, let’s say the only warm feeling many of her generation hanker after is a mug of Horlicks before bed.

Sitting with Petula you have to keep reminding yourself that she’s 83, for she could easily pass as a woman in her 50s. In fact, her only concession to her age is a sensible pair of crepe-soled shoes. From the ankles up, she’s a vision of flowing scarves and glowing skin, albeit a rather more lived-in skin than when she recorded her first big hit, The Little Shoemaker, in 1954.

‘I’m a woman so I have my good days and my bad days,’ she says. ‘I’m trying to lose a bit of weight at the moment, just around my hips. But as soon as I lose it, I’ll lose it on my face and up here.’ She cups her breasts. Shakes her head.

What did Elton John think of Karen Carpenter?

Plus, as young as she was, she seemed to have the capacity to mine the emotions of the stories she sang by tapping into feelings and sentiments usually found in people much older, and to then color each song with those emotions.

Certainly not everyone is a true believer; indeed, for every loyal fan there are perhaps three or four other people who claim a true disdain for Karen and Richard Carpenter and what they represented, musically. But there are plenty of fans-and not just the everyday types, but some of the music industry’s most respected luminaries. Over the years, in various published interviews in print and online, praise for Karen Carpenter has been nothing short of astonishing:

Elton John: « She has one of the greatest voices of our lifetime. »

Paul McCartney: « The best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive. »

Madonna: « Karen Carpenter had the clearest, purest voice. I’m completely influenced by her harmonic sensibility. »

Gwen Stefani: « It doesn’t matter how many times you hear it; you’ll still get goose bumps when you hear her sing. »

Robert Hilburn (former Los Angeles Times pop music critic): « The attraction for me was the intimacy and warmth of Karen’s singing-a strange but seductive blend of innocence and melancholia. »And Hilburn was one of those who didn’t even like the Carpenters!

Praise indeed-but there were plenty of problems, too.

In 1979, when Richard took time off to deal with a Quaalude addiction, Karen cut an album as a solo artist. Her producer was the legendary Phil Ramone. The album was a very accomplished mix of disco and light jazz of which both Karen and Ramone were justifiably proud. But Richard and the executives at A&M Records didn’t like the results, and the « Karen Carpenter » album was abandoned. (Richard released it in 1996, 13 years after his sister’s death.) Cutting that album was by far the most decisive thing Karen ever attempted on her own; by most accounts it was something she sorely needed to do for her self-esteem.

A few months after that disappointment she met and married a handsome and successful real estate developer by the name of Tom Burris. At least he said he was a successful real estate developer. Burris ended up going through most of his wife’s money, and also neglected to tell her that he had had a vasectomy. Karen almost more than anything in the world wanted to have children. She cried to her mother that she didn’t want go through with the wedding. But Agnes Carpenter said to her, « You made your bed, Karen. Now you’ll have to lie in it. »

Karen obeyed. There was a wedding.

What did John Lennon say to Karen Carpenter?

John was coming out and in passing, John said something to Karen, « a lovely voice, luv » or « a beautiful or a great voice luv, » and Karen was flabbergasted.

Did Elvis and the Carpenters ever meet?

And I saw too much of the damage it was doing.”Clark with Fred Astaire in the film Finian’s Rainbow, 1968. Photograph: Moviestore/Rex/Shutterstock

One of Clark’s great friends was Karen Carpenter, who she met in Los Angeles at the 1969 premiere of Goodbye, Mr Chips, in which Clark starred alongside Peter O’Toole. The Carpenters, then unsigned, were performing at the afterparty. Impressed, Clark introduced herself and pointed them out to Herb Alpert, who went on to sign them to A&M. She did not run into Karen often, but “we had that connection, so that every time we did see each other, we were close”.

When Clark and Carpenter – then the two “top girls” of the world of pop – met Elvis Presley in his dressing room after a show, he angled for a threesome, she says. “He was raring to go. Karen was lovely, but she was kind of innocent. I felt sort of responsible for her, so I got her out of there. Then I looked round, and Elvis was at the door, and he looked at me, like: ‘I’m going to get you one day.’” But he never did, she tells my voice recorder directly. “Some people think he did. I think he put out the rumour that he did. But he didn’t.”

Any regrets? “I didn’t find him that attractive,” she says apparently offhandedly. But when I ask what period of Elvis it was, she jumps at the implication. “Oh, it was when he was at his best! But he was almost too much.”

After Carpenter died from complications resulting from anorexia in 1983, Clark paid tribute to her “very dear friend” and her “strange, tragic end” at the Royal Albert Hall. “It was awful,” she says now. “I remember from the first time I met her, I saw the different phases of this thing, I could sense that something was going on. She got into that Beverly Hills thing, of being skinny.”

Clark worked in the studio with Richard Carpenter after his sister’s death. “I think he was still trying to find someone to replace her – he never will. But he was a hard taskmaster.” She whistles, rolls her eyes. “I think that was probably the secret to it. Not a lot of fun, no – but very, very clever.” Clark says she only had a “nightmare session” with one producer: Bob Crewe. “He just wanted to make me sound different.”

The music industry has come under a lot of scrutiny, for sexual harassment and abuse – did she ever feel vulnerable, especially as a young woman? She considers the question carefully. Women have changed; the world has, too. “I’ve come across all that stuff, of course.” She pauses for a long time. “I don’t want to get into that,” she says softly, almost to herself. Then she recaptures her train of thought.

How much is Denzel?

Ever since he got his big break on ’80s hospital soap St. Elsewhere (Dr. Phillip Chandler was the OG McDreamy, JSYK), Denzel Washington has been making *bank*. Just two years ago alone, he starred in two major films—The Little Things (which was a v profitable flop) and The Tragedy of MacBeth (which earned him Oscar, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards noms)—and it doesn’t look like he’s slowing down any time soon. Ofc, the question begs: Just how massive is Denzel Washington’s net worth? Answer: Pretty damn massive. Let’s take a lil journey through how Denzel amassed his full-on fortune, shall we?

First of all, he’s been in the biz for decades

After a few bit roles and TV movies, Denzel landed his breakout role on St. Elsewhere in 1982, and a star was born. There’s no solid intel on what his St. Elsewhere salary was exactly, but the series was a six-season hit with 137 episodes/paychecks to slide into Denzel’s bank account, so chances are he made a good amount of dough.

After its initial run, reruns of St. Elsewhere aired in syndication for a while, which no doubt earned Denzel even more $$$ in royalties. And FYI, all six seasons of the series are available to stream on Hulu rn so…get on it.

He started earning big paychecks in the ’90s

After his six-season run as Dr. Phillip Chandler, Denzel began his domination of the big screen. His first huge payday came in 1995 for the sci-fi movie Virtuosity (no, don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it). The movie wasn’t a box-office smash, but Denzel reportedly took home $7.5 million to star in it, and his paychecks only got more impressive from there.
