Did Xena kiss Gabrielle?

by Nadia Moulin

Even without her memories, Xena gravitates towards Gabrielle and awakens her with a kiss. In « Many Happy Returns », Xena buys tickets for Gabrielle’s birthday to go and see Sappho. And she even gets Sappho to write a poem for Gabrielle, which she then gives to her.

Who did Xena get pregnant by?

Eve

Eve, the Messenger of Eli

Livia

Livia of Rome

Eve is Xena’s daughter, and second child after her son, Solan who named Eve. Xena was made pregnant through imaculate conception through Eli and the angel Callisto. Callisto choses Eve to be her reincarnation for her spirit to be reborn.

Twilight of the Gods[]

The Fates prophesied that the birth of Eve would dawn the twilight of the Greek gods. Zeus was trying to kill her and Xena, but as she was being born, he was killed by Hercules trying to protect them. As a baby they tried to kill her with the forces of nature, and their priests, but she was being protected by Ares and Xena. Athena then lead the gods themselves to kill Eve. So Xena tricked the gods into thinking she and the baby were dead and gave Eve to Octavian to guard. Ares Xena and Gabrielle, who he thought was dead, and put them in ice coffins where they were preserved for 25 years.

Livia[]

Eve was brought up by Octavian, who changed his name to Augustus, who brought her up as Rome’s ruthless warlord. He changed her name to Livia to keep the gods from knowing who she was, and never told her who she was either.

Who is Xena in love with?

Sure, Xena became a remorseless killer in part because Caesar betrayed and crucified her, but it’s also because Caesar killed her girlfriend M’Lila.

When Xena teeters on death’s door after being stabbed, she hallucinates, falling into memories of her past. She once met the ruthless Caesar as a captive but she freed him, flirted with him, kissed him many times, and allowed him to return to Rome under the assumption that they would someday conquer the world together. Meanwhile, M’Lila trained with her and the two became close… friends. We’ll go with “friends.” Xena was on cloud nine until Caesar betrayed her, stole her ship, and killed M’Lila, who is easily our favorite person in the whole episode. M’Lila didn’t benefit too much from helping Xena, but she did try to warn her about Caesar, and Xena’s regret over not taking her more seriously haunts her at least until the end of this episode.

Borias and Lao Ma

Say what you will about Xena, our girl was all about the throuple. The Season 3 two-parter « The Debt » begins with Xena in a relationship with the warlord Borias, who would eventually become the father of her son, Solan. That’s a whole thing in and of itself, but what we came here for today is Lao Ma.

When Xena and Borias attempted to negotiate new deals with Lao Ma’s husband, she appeared in his stead and used all of her charms to broker a beneficial deal for them all. Xena is seized by jealousy and attempts to kill Lao Ma, but is easily beaten. Double-crosses abound and Xena nearly dies until Lao Ma accepts her as an… ally. We’ll go with “ally.” Of course, this all ends in tragedy because what episode of Xena doesn’t?

Was Xena In Love With Gabrielle?

[7] The two women soon develop a strong bond of love and friendship; by the sixth season this relationship has become romantic.[8]

The Battling Bard of Potidaea[edit]

Gabrielle starts the series as a young adult who more or less stands behind Xena, and relies on Xena to protect her.[7] Later on in the series, she acquires a quarterstaff from the Greek Amazons[9] and starts to use it as both a defensive and offensive weapon, displaying some skill in using the staff.[10] As the series goes on, Gabrielle’s skills with the staff continue to develop. In one episode, Gabrielle takes on numerous soldiers and single-handedly attempts to rescue Xena’s presumed dead body.[11] Two episodes later she is seen blocking an arrow in flight with her staff.[12] Later on, Gabrielle also adds kicks and minor acrobatics to her fighting abilities. Under the tutelage of Xena, she becomes worthy of many foes.

While in India, Gabrielle is thrown through time by a Darsham to save Xena’s soul. It is said that their souls are together throughout time.[13] In this next life Xena is the Mother of Peace, Arminestra and Gabrielle is Shakti, a Warrior Prince of India.[13] At the end of season 4, Gabrielle shows a leap in her warrior abilities. After months of following her path of the Way of Love,[14] Gabrielle picks up the sword of a paralyzed Xena and fights off a large group of Roman soldiers, killing several of them.[15] She has a child by an evil god called Dahak who she names Hope. It turns out that her child is evil and murderous. Xena and Gabrielle have a falling out over the death of her son (caused by Hope), and almost kill each other but are finally reconciled.

Xena is the protagonist of the story. The series depicts her quest to seek redemption for her past sins as a ruthless warlord by using her formidable fighting skills to help people. Xena was raised as the daughter of Cyrene and Atrius, though the episode The Future raised the possibility that Ares, the Hellene God Of War, might be Xena’s actual biological father.

Does Xena come back to life?

[13]

The path to redemption continues[edit]

Marcus, a warrior, close friend and lover from her warlord days, whom she persuades to follow her in choosing good, is killed while doing his first good deed.[14] Later, he is allowed to briefly return to the world of the living to help thwart a vicious killer who has escaped from the underworld. He and Xena spend a night together before Marcus has to return to the other side.[15] Several years after her first meeting with Lao Ma, a messenger is sent by Lao Ma to ask Xena to travel to China to aid in stopping a great evil from taking hold. She sets out without delay to help her dear friend but insists that she must deal with this alone and that Gabrielle stay behind.

In spite of her best efforts, she is too late to save her mentor and friend Lao Ma from being tortured to death by her own son, the emperor Ming T’ien and is crushed with the loss.[16] Finally, she and Gabrielle are crucified by the Romans on the Ides of March by Caesar, previously an ally and former lover of Xena’s with whom she had planned to take over known civilization until he betrayed her. Caesar, himself, is betrayed and killed by Brutus.[17] They are later revived by a mystic named Eli, a Jesus like figure, along with the spiritual aid of Callisto, who by that time had become an angel after being killed by Xena. This event would have long-lasting effects for all involved.[18]

Eve/Livia[edit]

The event mentioned above leads to the birth of Xena’s daughter, Eve. Callisto takes a prominent role in the events leading up to now. After Xena lets her die years ago she is sent to Tartarus but later she returns and becomes a god and an even greater enemy of Xena. Finally Xena attempts to save Callisto from her suffering by sacrificing herself. Callisto becomes an angel and Xena a devil or demon. Before Eve is born Callisto the angel, implants her soul in Xena’s unborn baby with Xena’s tacit acceptance, as a way to redeem herself from her past and her and her involvement in creating Callisto. Unfortunately, mother and daughter would have little time together, as the gods were bent on destroying the child to save themselves, as she is prophesied to bring about the Twilight of the Olympian gods and the birth of « Christianity ». In order to save her child, as well as herself and Gabrielle, they fake their deaths,[19] but their plan goes awry when Ares buries them in an ice cave, where they sleep for 25 years.

During that time, Eve is adopted by the Roman nobleman Octavius who provides for her every need and makes certain that she receives the best of everything.

Contents[] Ares on Xena: Warrior Princess[edit][]

Suave, charming, witty, yet ruthless and amoral, Ares often represents, especially in the early seasons, the seductive power of war and the dark side. He repeatedly attempts to lure Xenaaway from her quest for redemption alongside Gabrielle, and to win her over as his Warrior Queen.[2] He offers her huge armies and historic victories, great wealth and great power, and in later seasons his love,[3] offers which she consistently rejects despite being sometimes tempted.

Much of Ares’ relationship with Xena remains ambiguous, including whether he is at least partly redeemed by his love for Xena, or to what extent Xena reciprocates his feelings. He says several times that he has « a thing » for Xena, and this seems to prevent him from killing her, even when pitted against her in deadly combat.,[4][5] yet he pursues her sexually and romantically.

Their relationship prior to the show’s timeline is also a mystery. The dialogue in an early episode strongly suggests that this is their first face-to-face meeting;[2] subsequent episodes, however, establish that at some point in the past he trained her and may have been her lover as well. It is also stated that Ares gave Xena her signature weapon, the chakram.[6]

« They had this idea for the God of War, » Kevin Smith remembered. « They wanted a foil for Xena – someone who could beat her in battle, and a former mentor. The weird thing is there’s sympathy for the character, because he’s done terrible, terrible things and yet, at the bottom of it all, the only way this works is if you believe he truly loves Xena. Of course Ares did admit his love for her and Xena never said it but she loved Ares. »[7]

The story[edit][]

During season 1, Ares frames her for murdering three villagers in the hope that she will call on him for help when threatened with execution.[2] He also takes the shape of her long-lost father Atrius and nearly tricks her into attacking a village. However, these plans are thwarted by Xena and Gabrielle.

Xena is a fictional character from Robert Tapert’s Xena: Warrior Princess franchise, portrayed by New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless and co-created by Tapert and John Schulian. She first appeared as a villain in the 1995–1999 television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys before joining forces with Hercules. Xena was popular with fans, so the producers decided to create a spin-off with the character in the starring role. She later appeared in the subsequent comic book of the same name, as well as the spin-off animated film The Battle for Mount Olympus, and non-canon expanded universe material, such as books and video games.

Xena is the protagonist of the story, and the series depicts her on a quest to redeem herself from her dark past by using her formidable fighting skills to help people. She is joined by the bard Gabrielle, and together they go up against ruthless warlords and gods in the ancient mythological world. Xena was raised as the daughter of Cyrene and Atrius in Amphipolis; though the episode « The Furies » raises the possibility that Ares might be Xena’s biological father, it is never pursued further. She has two brothers, the younger of whom is dead.

Creation and production[edit] Xena co-creator Robert Tapert.

Xena was developed in 1995 by John Schulian as a secondary character for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, although Lawless had already appeared as the character Lyla on the episode « As Darkness Falls », on 20 February 1995.[1] Xena was originally conceived to die at the end of the third episode, « Unchained Heart », but when the studio decided they wanted to do a spin-off from Hercules, the producer Robert Tapert said that Xena was the best choice, since she was largely well received by television critics and fans and had a full story to be explored.[2] The studio wanted to do something about Jason and the Argonauts, but Tapert said that show would have too much of the same feel as Hercules.[2]

The original choice to play Xena was the British actress Vanessa Angel, but she fell ill and was unable to make it to the set.[3] Ultimately the role was given to Lawless as she was already a resident of New Zealand.

Is Xena based on Greek mythology?

Xena is a fictional character that was created for the television series Xena: Warrior Princess. The series was based on various myths of ancient Greece and adapted them to fit the scenario. Xena was depicted as the daughter of Orestes and Cyrene, although in one episode, it is mentioned that the god of war Ares may have been her biological father. Throughout the series, Xena tried to redeem herself for the villainous activities that she committed in the past, and became a hero trying to help people in need. She was always accompanied by her best friend Gabrielle.

Her first appearance was in the television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, in which she appeared as a villain. However, the positive reaction of the audience and the critics caused the producers of the series to create the spin-off series in which Xena was the protagonist. Her signature weapon was the chakram, a throwing weapon which she masterfully deflected off various surfaces in order to hit multiple targets in one throw. The character was played by the New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless.

Did Lucy Lawless on Xena and Gabrielle have a relationship?

Lawless stated that after the series finale, where Gabrielle revives Xena with a mouth-to-mouth water transfer filmed to look like a full kiss, she had come to believe that Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was « definitely gay…there was always a ‘well, she might be or she might not be’ but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me. Now it wasn’t just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was ‘Nope, they’re married, man’. »[21]

The Xena fandom also popularized the term Altfic (from « alternative fiction ») to refer to same-sex romantic fan fiction.[22] Many fans felt the term slash fiction carried the connotation of being about male/male couples only and was not a good description for romantic fan fiction about Xena and Gabrielle.

Shipping wars[edit]

The Xena: Warrior Princess fandom often saw nasty « shipping wars » that turned especially intense due to spillover from real-life debates about same-sex sexuality and gay rights.

Shortly after the 1995 debut of the action/fantasy series about a woman warrior seeking redemption for a dark past, fans started discussing the possibility of a relationship between Xena and her sidekick and best friend Gabrielle.[6] Toward the end of the first season, the show’s producers began to play to this perception by deliberately inserting usually humorous lesbian innuendo into some episodes.[6] The show acquired a cult following in the lesbian community.[6] However, Xena had a number of male love interests as well, and from the first season she had an adversarial but sexually charged dynamic with Ares, the God of War, who frequently tried to win her over as his « Warrior Queen. »[6]

In a 10-year retrospective of the show in Salon.com, journalist Cathy Young wrote:[23]

Almost from the start, the fandom was bitterly divided among various factions, particularly subtext fans pitted against those who saw Xena and Gabrielle as friends. Fandom wars over relationships are nothing new: « X-Files » fans clashed vehemently over whether Mulder and Scully should do the deed. In the « Xena » fandom, though, these wars had the added angle of sexual politics. Some of the anti-subtext sentiment was undoubtedly driven by bona fide bigotry. Some lesbian fans, on the other hand, approached the argument as a real-life gay rights struggle and labeled all dissent as homophobic: To them, denying a sexual relationship between Xena and Gabrielle was tantamount to denying the reality of their own lives, and the « Are they or aren’t they » tease was an insulting way to keep the characters in the closet. In a way, knowing that the staff paid attention to fan opinions may have made matters worse: There was an incentive for the rival groups to out-shout one another to make themselves heard.

Did Xena and Hercules hook up?

I enjoy watching them « walk the tight rope » as some have said. [26] In conclusion, looking at Xena’s history with men and women, her most successful relationships have been with woman, excluding the Callisto connection, if indeed you grant one. M’Lila, Lao Ma, and now Gabrielle have all been good « partners » for Xena, regardless of the nature that you ascribe to that partnership.

[27] Of the men she’s had and has genuinely loved, Marcus, who is dead, is out of the running for Xena’s affections, but she remembers him fondly. Hercules, who is not going to settle down anytime soon, is also not a candidate, though he started her back on the right path when she had lost her way. Is there actually any real possibility of Xena settling down with a man? In A DAY IN THE LIFE (39/215), Gabrielle put it best: « I don’t think settling down is for her ». BUT, Gabrielle also says of her traveling companion, « She likes what I do! »Draw your own conclusions.
