Was Whoopi’s daughter in Sister Act 2?

As Ralph shares, there was always more depth — and pain — below the surface of her character than there appeared to be.

What did life look like for you when Sister Act 2 came into the picture? Oh my gosh, my son Etienne had just been born and was going to set with me. I was so happy knowing that I was somebody’s mother, just loving that more than anybody can ever imagine. If I’m not wrong, before Sister Act 2, I think I had done Distinguished Gentleman, so there was a string of movies where I played all these different kinds of women.

With Sister Act 2, I met with Bill Duke, a great director. I look at the role, and here she is — I won’t say she’s the evil mother, but she’s very much hurt by what has happened to her with her husband trying to live his dreams and being an artist. Now here comes her daughter and she wants those same dreams. Florence just doesn’t know where it’s going to end up, and she does what can happen sometimes: She starts to kill her child’s dream. I read it and I said, “Okay, there are a whole lot of mothers like that, so let’s see if we can bring some life and difference to this one.” And I think we did because she still lives on in people’s minds to this day.

Did you have to audition for the role?At that time, it was basically they were sending you the script to read to ask you, “What did you think about the character, blah blah blah, are you interested in doing it?” It was a process of reading it, loving it, and accepting it.

We get introduced to your character, Florence Watson, in the movie when she’s sternly shouting out of a window for her daughter, Rita, to come inside while she’s in the middle of talking to her high-school friends —“Rita Louise Watson, if you don’t get in here …”

Yes! It was a memorable introduction to their mother-daughter dynamic. Was there a person from your life you kept in mind when playing Florence? Oh, definitely a bit of my mother. My mother is that strong immigrant West Indian mother who wants you to do the absolute best. But she wants you to do things the way she wants you to do things because that is definitely the best way. [Laughs.]

And Lauryn Hill was a baby. She was only 16!

This was before the Fugees and her solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but it was clear even then that she was a star. What was it like working with her at that stage in her career? It was wonderful for me because, I got to tell you, 16-year-old Lauryn Hill had a very good idea of who she was.

Are the choirs in Sister Act 2 real?

“I had to get Orange High students because when they called me in August, school was out and I couldn’t get hold of many of the Chapman choir members. So I recruited some students from Orange High School.”

The group depicted in the movie is called the “Chapman Choir of Orange County’s Grand High School.” There is no Grand High School in Orange County: that’s just motion picture magic. But there is a Chapman Choir at Chapman University here, and it is conducted by Hall.

Hall, 59, who holds a Ph.D. from USC, is well-known in the music world, having made international appearances as a conductor and produced several records.

Although “Sister Act 2” is only make-believe, how Hollywood came to cast Hall and the Chapman Choir is almost a movie within a movie.

    Cut to August.

“Sister Act 2”–with a planned Christmas opening–is in trouble. To the moguls’ dismay, their first choice for a champion choir is not working out. A replacement group is needed–and fast. Two engineers on the movie set, who had previously worked with Hall at a recording studio, suggest that the producers call the Chapman music dean.

“I was called on a Friday night and asked if I could put together a choir for the following Sunday afternoon at 4,” Hall said.

Who actually sang in Sister Act 2?

She is lip-synching – very well, it has to be said – to the vocals of singer Andrea Robinson, who has lent her vocals to many TV shows and films, like The Tigger Movie and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning.

Feeling betrayed? It’s understandable. The realisation that this quiet young woman had the voice of an angel, had something special hidden beneath her habit and her reluctant demeanour, was buoyant and beautiful. It shouldn’t be lessened by the discovery that it’s an act – it is a film: it’s all an act – but if you watched Sister Act as a child then finding out the artifice – realising what’s going into the sausages – is still slightly disappointing, don’t you think?

Wendy, I’m sure, wouldn’t mind such a sentiment being vocalised. She used Sister Act as a springboard into a long career in film, television and theatre. She’s shown up in everything from Air Bud to Desperate Housewives, CSI to The Mob Doctor. Last year, she appeared in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, alongside Tom Hanks.

Did Whoopi Goldberg do her own singing in Sister Act 1 and 2?

The movie follows a subplot in which Goldberg’s character Deloris helps the shy and soft-spoken Sister Mary Robert become a full-fledged singer with a strong enough voice to carry the entire room. But the actress didn’t actually belt her verses and was instead dubbed by Andrea Robinson. Whoopi Goldberg, however, sang all of her parts herself.

    10. The scenes around the church were shot in an upper-middle-class neighbourhood and not in a rundown part of San Francisco as the film would have you believe. To make the area around St. Paul’s Catholic Church look more « dodgy, » the street was covered with rubbish and « abandoned » cars.

Sister Act London musical tickets are selling incredibly fast!

It’s been nearly two weeks since it was announced that the legendary Whoopi Goldberg would be reprising her role as Deloris Van Cartier and now Sister Act has quickly become one of the fastest pre-sales for a West End show this year and has undoubtedly broken box-office records for the Eventim Apollo. While many tickets are still available for this limited one-month run, most of the good seats have been snatched up! But you can still catch some tickets for Sister Act if you « get your act together » now and « act fast! »

Is Sister Act 3 really happening?

All uncertainties aside, fans are just grateful to have Sister Act 3 happen at all. The fact that we will witness our favorite nun delivering quips on screen one more time alone is enough to make the wait for Sister Act 3’s further confirmed details and arrival on Disney+ worthwhile.

    Can Wendy Makkena really sing?

She’s a classically-trained musician and played harp from the age of 8. When she did Sister Act (1992), her singing voice was actually dubbed by professional singer Andrea Robinson. Played harp at Carnegie Hall at the age of 10.

Does Whoopi Goldberg have a biological child?

[139] Her other ex-boyfriends include businessman Michael Visbal,[140] orthodontist Jeffrey Cohen,[141] camera operator Edward Gold[142] and actors Timothy Dalton[143] and Ted Danson.[144] Danson controversially appeared in blackface during his 1993 Friars Club roast; Goldberg wrote some of his jokes for the event and defended Danson after a media furor.[145]

She has stated that she has no plans to marry again: « Some people are not meant to be married and I am not meant to. I’m sure it is wonderful for lots of people. »[136] In a 2011 interview with Piers Morgan, she explained that she was never in love with the men she married[146] and commented: « You have to really be committed to them…I don’t have that commitment. I’m committed to my family. »[135]

On May 9, 1974, Goldberg gave birth to a daughter, Alexandrea Martin, who also became an actress and producer.[147] Through her daughter, Goldberg has three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.[148] On August 29, 2010, Goldberg’s mother, Emma Johnson, died after having a stroke.[149] She left London at the time, where she had been performing in the musical Sister Act, but returned to perform on October 22, 2010. In 2015, Goldberg’s brother Clyde died of a brain aneurysm.[150]

In 1991, Goldberg spoke out about her abortion in The Choices We Made: Twenty-Five Women and Men Speak Out About Abortion. In that book, she spoke about using a coat hanger to terminate a pregnancy at age 14.[151] She said she had had six or seven abortions by the age of 25 and that birth control pills failed to stop several of her pregnancies.[152] After the 2022 Kansas abortion referendum, Goldberg claimed that God would support abortion rights because he gave women freedom of choice.[153]

Goldberg has stated that she was once a « functioning » drug addict.[154] She has stated that she smoked marijuana before accepting the Best Supporting Actress award for Ghost in 1991.[155][156]

Goldberg has dyslexia.[157] She has lived in Llewellyn Park, a neighborhood in West Orange, New Jersey, saying she moved there to be able to be outside in private.[158] She maintains an additional summer residence on the coast of Sardinia.[159] She has expressed a preference for defining herself by the gender-neutral term « actor » rather than « actress », saying: « An actress can only play a woman. I’m an actor–I can play anything. »[5] In March 2019, Goldberg revealed that she had been battling pneumonia and sepsis, which caused her to take a leave of absence from The View.[160]

Filmography Awards and honors Whoopi Goldberg signature at Grauman’s Chinese Theater

Having acted in over 150 films, Goldberg is one of the 17 people to achieve the EGOT, having won the four major American awards for professional entertainers: an Emmy (Television), a Grammy (Music), an Oscar (Film), and a Tony (Theater).

Why did she change her name to Whoopi Goldberg?

Does Whoopi have a medical condition?

Whoopi Goldberg is recovering after suffering from sciatica. Goldberg returned to The View on Tuesday after not appearing on the show for a week, and explained that her absence was caused by the health issue.

Goldberg, 65, appeared in good spirits despite her painful experience.

« Yes, it’s me, I’m back, » she said. « I was out because I was dealing with something called sciatica, which is basically a bulging disc in your back and it impacts the sciatic nerve, which sends pain down your leg. I’m telling you, it’s like a bad boyfriend … a bad boyfriend who came back to mess with me. »

« There I was, trying to move my leg — impossible to do, » she continued. « It was really horrible. But I’m glad to be here. »

Goldberg said she now has to use a walker to get around.

« I have a walker, which kind of freaked me out, » she acknowledged. « I didn’t know that I needed it. And you know what? My first step with the walker, this is my new best friend. I’m just gliding along. So, that’s what happened to me. I’m told that it comes out of nowhere.
